AFIS SDK, Griaule AFIS SDK, Automated fingerprint identification System

SDK to develop Automated fingerprint identification Systems

Description of AFIS SDK

The AFIS SDK enables developing governmental solutions for large-scale identification with AFIS technology for Civil or Criminal databases, border control, passports, and electronic voting.

It complies with international standards and certifications.

Features of AFIS SDK

Auxiliary Images help you to figure out different aspects of the fingerprint. Griaule AFIS SDK can supply five types of auxiliary images:
  • a 500 DPI version of the extracted image;
  • a binary image;
  • a quality map;
  • a ridge directions map;
  • a ridge image
Useful tool for manual analysis:   The AFIS SDK automatically detects singularities like cores and deltas.

Singularities are points where ridges have high curvature, forming the global patterns of the fingerprint. The most common singularities are the cores and the deltas. In the core region, the fingerprint has two distinct directions of ridge flow; in a delta region, the fingerprint has three distinct directions of ridge flow. This detection is very useful in manual detection of patterns, in manual 'matching' of two fingerprints, in latent fingerprints enhancement, etc.

Keep fingerprints organized:   Databases of fingerprint cards for law enforcement and civil enrollment can easily grow to hundreds of millions records. Even for the fastest computers, search through this database can take an inordinate amount of time. Fortunately, fingerprints can be classified and this classification can be used to split the fingerprint databases. This classification is the traditional method of indexing and searching for fingerprint cards. Once a finger pattern is identified, this finger can be searched only against fingers with the same pattern classification, reducing the total time of search.

The AFIS SDK can classify fingerprints into six basic pattern-level classes known as: arch, left loop, right loop, scar, tented arch, whorl.

Full support for manual template adjustment:   The AFIS SDK has a set of functions that enable full template editing, thus allowing correction or inclusion of information in low quality or latent prints. Griaule AFIS provide full access to template information, easing the work of developing template editing applications.

Palm and latent fingerprint matching available:   Palm and Latent fingerprints present a great challenge, for which Griaule AFIS SDK is prepared to deal. The extraction algorithm can deal with images as large as 200x100 mm; matching algorithms have specific parameters and functions to deal with Palm and Latent prints.

Additional algorithm to improve performance:   Innovative matching algorithm to be used as a post matching to the conventional "minutiae based" one.

Griaule developed an innovative matching algorithm to be used as a post matching to the conventional "minutiae based" matching algorithm. This algorithm improves the system overall performance. It runs when the score using the primary algorithm is not satisfactory and can add or subtract scores, reducing the false acceptance rate and the false rejection rate.

Ability to capture slap and rolled fingerprints:   Automatic capture from the most important devices in the market. One of the most powerful features of Griaule AFIS SDK is integrating in a single component, the extraction, matching and capture processes. Griaule AFIS SDK can capture slap and rolled fingerprints in automatic and manual mode and can show live video. Devices supported:

  • Crossmatch USB V300 and V500.
  • Smiths Heimann Biometrics L SCAN 100R (USB) and ACCO 1394S (Firewire).
  • WDM-compliant fingerprint readers, having frame grabbers with video output.
Automatic and manual capture modes:   It is possible to have Griaule AFIS SDK working in automatic capture mode. In this mode an algorithm detect the presence of a finger in the fingerprint reader and does an automatic capture of the image. The rolling of a finger on the fingerprint reader is also detected, firing the start of a rolled capture.

Ease of development:   Griaule AFIS SDK comes with additional functions designed to speed up and simplify the development of large and complex applications. The library comes with functions to locate minutiae and segments near a given place in the image, having the purpose of helping development of applications which need interactive operations, such as minutia adding and removal. Another set of interesting functions for the developer is the function to load and save bitmaps to/from files. The library has yet two more functions designed to help showing images and templates on screen.

Fully configurable features:   The large set of features presented in this library is fully configurable. It is possible to change the behavior and characteristics of the image capture, template extraction, matching and post matching.

Editions of AFIS SDK

There are two SDK editions available: Country and State. Country version is faster than the State for the same type of images.

Using any of these editions, you will be able to develop applications using our SDK and modify the sample code to fit your needs. Both are fully compatible and full featured. They only differ on the matching speed.

Do you need AFIS SDK?

You need an AFIS SDK if you:

  • want to feed small to large civil or criminal systems
  • intend to edit and visually compare fingerprints before search
  • are a fingerprint expert
  • intend to search latents or palmars
  • need Vucetich or Henry fingerprint classification

You don't need an AFIS SDK if you:

  • Need typical biometric application such as time and attendance, access control, computer logon.

The table below compares both SDKs.

Feature Griaule AFIS Fingerprint SDK
Image capture Flat, rolled, latent, palmar Flat
Image type Fingerprint, palmprint Fingerprint
Image source Live, paper, crime scene Live, paper
Fingerprint readers Big platen areas (1"x1" or more) Small platen
Optimization For finding fingerprint For speed
Template size (configurable) average 5 kilobytes 250 ~ 1000 bytes

System requirements of AFIS SDK

Supported operating systems:
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows XP Professional
  • Windows XP Home Edition
  • Windows XP Media Center Edition
  • Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
  • Windows 2000 Server (Service Pack 2 or later recommended)
  • Windows 2000 Professional (Service Pack 2 or later recommended)
  • Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me)
  • Windows 98 SE
  • Windows 98 with IE 5.0 or later
  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 6a with IE 5.0 or later required)
Minimum hardware requirements: 1 GHz Pentium III Processor or equivalent. 512MB of RAM. 100MB of free hard disk space. You also need to check the supported operating systems and the computer requirements for the fingerprint reader that you are going to use. In order to do this, check the manufacturer's website or the fingerprint reader's documentation. In order to use WDM capture, Windows 2000 or later is required.

Supported Integrated Development Environments: Griaule AFIS ActiveX library is supported by all IDEs that fully support ActiveX. It was fully tested with Visual Basic 6, Delphi and Visual Studio .NET, which are the most commonly used IDEs for Windows. If you intend to create your applications, using a programming language that is not supported by these IDEs, you should try to get the Griaule AFIS ActiveX imported to your language. An example is Delphi, which imports the Griaule AFIS ActiveX in a package that wraps the ActiveX.

Supported Programming Languages: C#.Net, Java / J2EE / JSP, C++,, Delphi, VB6, VB.NET, Foxpro 8, Foxpro 9, MS Access, Asp

Should work with: Matlab, Labview, PowerBuilder, Visual Lisp, dBase, Remedy, Assembly, Clipper(Newer Versions), D, JavaScript, Perl, Python, Python.NET, Ruby, Smalltalk, VBScript
